03 Jul USA Fabric Banner
The countdown to America’s 250th birthday is officially on, and we couldn’t think of a better excuse to pull out all the red, white, and blue!
Before you head to the craft store, take a peek in your fabric and ribbon stash. We found the cutest plaid fabric from our local Dollar Tree (which inspired this week’s project), but there’s a good chance you already have everything you need to make this fun DIY USA banner.
With just a few scraps of patriotic fabric, ribbon, felt, and a wooden dowel, you’ll create a charming piece of Fourth of July decor that’s perfect for celebrating America’s 250th birthday.
Simple supplies. Classic Americana style. And (almost) zero dollars spent. Now that’s our kind of DIY! 🔥
You’ll need…
- Piece of patriotic plaid fabric with a mostly white background
- 8×12 inch sheet white felt
- Scraps of brighter, darker red, white and blue fabric
- Various ⅜ inch patriotic ribbons like these stars and stripes or fun patriotic shapes
- Star-shaped button in either red, white or blue
- Red ultra-fine point Sharpie
- Black ultra-fine point Sharpie
- 1/4 in wood dowel rod
- Fabric glue
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun and sticks
- White twine
- Fold the white sheet of felt in half lengthwise. You’re going to make a diagonal cut that starts about 2 inches from the bottom on the folded side of the felt. Then continue your cut downward towards the bottom corner on the opposite side. Open up the felt and you’ve got your banner shape. Save the scrap of white felt for later.
- Glue your fabric to one side of the felt and trim away any excess fabric. This will give you a fabric front and a felt back to your banner.
- Using the brighter patriotic fabrics, cut out the letters U, S, and A. so that the letters are about 3.5 inches in size. Adhere these to the front of your banner and feel free to overlap the letters slightly as you glue them down.
- Cut a small white star shape from the white felt scrap. Glue it onto the center of the A.
- Use the markers to make red “stitch marks” around the white felt star and black stitch marks around the USA letters.
- Next, take 5-6 patriotic ribbons (about 8-9 inches long) and glue them together at one end to make a “tassel”. Glue the tassel to the upper left corner of your banner. Add a fun star button to the top of your tassel for a cute embellishment.
- Flip the banner over and cut out two rectangular tabs of felt or fabric and glue them onto the felt backing near the top. Make sure to leave an opening in the center of each tab – so you can then thread the dowel rod into the tabs.
- Tie a string to each end of the dowel rod to make a hanger.
This little USA banner is simple, festive, and just plain fun to put together. Hang it on your front door, tuck it into a gallery wall, display it on a mantel, or brighten up your favorite little nook with a touch of cozy Americana charm all summer long.
