DIY Sweater Sock Pumpkins & Pawprints

Today we’re sharing a quick and easy fall craft project that takes cozy old sweaters and turns them into pumpkins! Similar ones are popping up on Pinterest but of course these fuzzy pumpkins are in honor of our furry best friends – so we’re calling this no sew DIY project: Sweater Sock Pumpkins & Pawprints.

In just a few steps, you’ll learn how to turn the sleeves of a sweater – or a soft pair of socks – into darling little pumpkins without sewing! You’re sure to love how cute they turn out and how simple it is to make these charming wooly pumpkins for your Halloween and autumn home decor.

You’ll need…

  • Jute twine
  • Hot glue gun and sticks
  • Scissors
  • Embellishment items such as markers, ribbon, felt and buttons, etc.
Step 1

Using a sock? Cut off the foot portion of the sock so you are left with a knit tube about 6 inches long. This will make one pumpkin.

Using a sweater? Cut a sleeve off the sweater at the armpit and cut the sleeve in half. Each half will make a pumpkin.

Step 2

Cut 5-6 strings of yarn or cotton twine a few inches longer than your knit tube.

Step 3

Turn the knit tube inside out, pull all the strings through the middle (so that the strings hang out on each end of the tube) and wrap one end of the tube and strings tightly with a rubber band. Turn right side out.

Step 4

Time to stuff the pumpkin! Add an inch or two of dried beans to the bottom. This helps the pumpkin hold its shape and gives it a weighted base. Add poly-fill a little more than halfway up the knit container.

Step 5

Position the strings evenly around the stuffed ball to create sections of your pumpkin and close the top with a rubber band – making sure to capture the 5 string ends. Pull the string ends tight, as your mold and shape the ball to help it look more like a pumpkin. Cut off the ends of the string.

Step 6

Tie some jute twine around the rubber band and begin winding the jute tightly around the top to create a stem. Cut a leaf shape in the knit fabric and leave it hanging out as you work your way around the stem. (Or you can glue on a leaf shape later made from felt.) Glue the end of jute in place and cut off any excess fabric.

Step 7

Embellish your little pumpkin with dog-themed ribbons and create paw prints using a marker or buttons, etc.

These cuties will really dress up your fall decor! Super easy, and we love the little doggie details and the warm fuzzy texture they add to any room. Makes a great evening project!
