31 Jul 3D Paper Straws Summer Wreath

Sometimes the best DIY ideas start with something you never planned to buy… 

There we were… just another day wandering the aisles of Dollar Tree looking for inspiration, when a package of colorful paper straws caught our eye. But these aren’t your ordinary straws. They have bright pink flamingos and sunny yellow pineapples on them that pop open into these fun, 3D honeycomb shapes. The moment we saw them, the creative wheels started turning!

This week’s Dollar Tree DIY transforms those festive party straws into a bright, cheerful summer wreath that’s perfect for your front door, porch, or patio. Topped with an adorable “Summer Chillin'” sign and a simple bow, it’s an easy–peasy, budget-friendly craft that captures everything we love about the sunny season.

You’ll need…

• 10 inch wood round
• 55 flamingo or pineapple paper straws
• Summer party paper cutouts
• Yellow or white acrylic paint and brush
• 2 inch wide ribbon in pink or yellow
• Fabric glue
• Hot glue gun and sticks
• Scissors
• White cotton twine
• Pencil or pen

1.  Give the wood round a nice even coat of yellow or white paint. Let dry.
2. Draw a 3-inch circle in the center of the wood round. (If you can find a coffee mug or pencil holder that’s about 3 inches in diameter to trace around, this will make it easier to make your circle!)
3. Open up the paper flamingo or pineapple honeycomb on your straw and tape the back tabs together so the backside is flat and secure. Do this for 22 straws.
4. Glue one straw down onto the wood round with the bottom edge of the straw aligned with the circle you drew earlier.
5. Next, take a new straw and cut it at the base of the flamingo or pineapple. This will give you a medium sized straw. Do this with 22 straws. You should have a pile of medium sized straws and shorter ones that still have the flamingo or pineapple on them.
6. Paste a medium-sized straw next to the straw you’ve already attached to the wood form, making sure the two bottoms line up on the inner circle. Glue a 3D straw next to it, then another medium straw. Alternate gluing the rest of your 3D and medium-sized straws next to each other until you’ve gone all the way around the wood form. As you work your way around, try to place the straws so the bottoms align with the inner circle and the tops are evenly spaced apart.
7. Now it’s time to use the leftover straw ends that still have the flamingo or pineapple on them. Remove the paper decoration and adhere these smaller straws in-between every straw you’ve already glued down. (So you’ll end up with a pattern like this: 3D straw, short straw, medium straw, short straw, 3D straw, short, medium, short, 3D, etc.) When you run out of small straws, cut up more new straws to get the pieces you need to complete the wreath.
8. Dollar Tree has a bunch of paper banners and tropical party decorations that coordinate with your straws. Pick your favorite and glue it in the center of the wreath. Add a cute bow to cover any holes in the sign and complete the look.
9. Use some colorful twine to make a hanger and you’re ready to hang this cheery wreath for everyone to enjoy!
