DIY Snuffle Cupcake Dog Toy

Oh my gosh, have we got the best dog toy makeover for you!! Today we’re upgrading this adorable plush cupcake dog toy and turning it into a fun and tasty snuffle dog puzzle toy for your furry best friend. ‘Cuz we all know the best part of a cupcake is the frosting!

As you know, snuffle dog toys are one of the best interactive games to keep your dog busy…. and we’re kinda obsessed with them around here. 😉

Some of the things we love best about this project is that it’s so cheap and easy to make; it’s so friggin’ cute; and it’s totally portable! Take it with you when you travel, go to the park, play in the backyard, or visit grandma and grandpa. And your little couch potato can even play with it next to you while you’re snuggled up together watching your favorite shows.

Oh and this would make the sweetest gotcha day or dog birthday gift, too! Pretty sweet, huh?!

You’ll need…

  • One shoelace
  • Needle and thread
  • A sharp pair of scissors
Step 1

To makeover this toy, we need to give it new fluffy “frosting” that your pups can sniff and snuffle in. Start by cutting a dozen fleece circles in different sizes. The largest should be 5 inches wide and the smallest should be about 3 inches wide. For this example, here’s what we made:

  • two 5 inch circles
  • five 4.5 inch circles
  • three 4 inch circles
  • two 3 inch circles

Then, snip two small holes into the center of each.

Step 2

Next, thread the shoelace through all of the circles, starting with the smallest and then gradually adding larger and larger circles. To do this, poke the two ends of the shoelace through the two holes of the smallest fleece circle. Continue adding larger and larger fleece circles until all have been threaded through the middle. Tie a knot to secure the circles together (knot should be on top of the largest circle) and cut any excess shoestring – leaving tails about an inch long.

Step 3

Cut out a bunch of tiny rectangles (or “sprinkles”) using various colors of felt and randomly stitch across the top of the fleece circles you just bunched together.

Step 4

Remove the red cherry that sits on top of the cupcake toy. Then, with needle and thread, make a line of stitches that go through the top of the cupcake, the shoelace and the first fleece circle. It’s important to include the shoelace into these first stitches, to ensure the frosting (or bunched circles) stays put.

Next, make stitches that attach the first fleece circle all the way around the top of the cupcake. This will also provide more security for the frosting to stay in place.

Step 5

Fill the toy with your dog’s favorite dry food kibbles or small treats, give it to your pup and let the fun begin! Keep an eye on them as they interact with the toy and solve the tasty puzzle. When they’re done, ensure it’s empty of treats and toss it in the wash. Let air dry.

Okie dokie artichokie… Now you can muffle that kerfuffle with a new way to snuffle! Next time your dog is bored, why not make them their very own doggie DIY Snuffle Cupcake Dog Toy! If you give this dog-themed craft project a try, we’d love to know how your pup enjoys the extra-special fluffy frosting on top.
