DIY Reverse Canvas LOVE Pawprint Decor

Today we’re making the cutest Dollar Tree doggie DIY using a sweet and simple LOVE Pawprint design! Of course, one of the things we love about it is that this craft is super easy to customize using any colors, patterns or designs that suit your fancy.

There’s also a fun twist to getting the look of this fabulous wall art – called a reverse canvas technique – that helps to turn a tiny budget into gorgeous, expensive-looking doggie decor.

You’ll need…

  • Pencil
  • Xacto knife
  • Hot glue gun
  • Wet wipes (or wet paper towels)

Step 1

First, remove the stretched canvas from its wooden frame by using a box cutter knife or razor blade to cut around the outside edge of the staples on the back side of the frame.

Step 2

Pull the canvas off and remove any loose canvas bits from under the staples. Be sure to leave the four corner staples that secure the wood frame together, so it doesn’t come apart.

Step 3

Dab a wet wipe with a small amount of paint and use this to “stain” the wood – rubbing any excess paint off as you go. The idea is to leave some of the wood grain still showing.

Step 4

Cut the excess edge off the canvas, using the inner crease as your guide, so that you’re left with a flat canvas rectangle that matches the size of your frame.

Step 5

To attach the canvas to the frame, first place hot glue across the top 1/4 portion of the back of the frame and press the canvas in place (oatmeal side down). Spread hot glue along the sides and bottom back of the frame and pull the canvas tight as you secure it in place. This helps you have a nice firm canvas backdrop.

Step 6

Download and print our (free) LOVE pawprint template onto a piece of paper and cut out all the shapes. Trace everything onto your favorite scrapbook papers and cut everything out.

Step 7

Lay them in place on your canvas backdrop so you know just where everything will go. Then start applying a thin layer of Mod Podge across the canvas and press your letters and pawprint in place. Cover the paper pieces with another thin layer of Mod Podge to protect them.

Add a hanger, if you’d like, and it’s good to go!

Isn’t this just the most darling doggy decor in honor of your little love bug?! And it’s one of those projects that’s just so simple yet elegant – and it’s pawfectly suited for anywhere in your house – in your kitchen, the dog’s area, a child’s room…on shelves, etc.
