Step 1

First, remove the stretched canvas from its wooden frame by using a flat head screwdriver to remove staples – or use a razor blade to cut around the outside edge of the staples on the back side of the frame. Pull the canvas off. Be sure to leave the corner staples that secure the wood frame together, so it doesn’t come apart.

Step 2

Dab a wet wipe with a small amount of paint and use this to “stain” the wood – rubbing any excess paint off as you go so some of the wood grain still shows. Don’t forget to work the paint into the tight corners.

Step 3

Cut the excess edge off the canvas, using the inner crease as your guide, so that you’re left with a flat canvas rectangle that matches the size of your frame.

Step 4

Use glue to attach the canvas to the back of the frame (oatmeal side facing down). Pull the canvas tight as you secure it in place. This helps you have a nice firm canvas backdrop. Trim any excess canvas, as needed.

Step 5

Tear the edges of a piece of scrapbook paper to fit the inside of your canvas. Glue in place.

Step 6

Trace a paw print onto a thin piece of cardboard or cardstock, paint the shape brown, and cut out all the shapes.

Step 7

Time to let your creative juices flow! Pick out about 40 of your favorite brown buttons in a variety of shapes and sizes and begin to glue them down onto the paw pieces.

Start with the larger, flatter buttons on the first layer and then continue filling the shape with more decorative buttons as you go. Select letters from the alphabet beads to add the name of your pup into the mix of buttons – or use a fun dog saying. The copper beads are great for filling in any of those tiny spaces left around the buttons.

Step 8

Lay the paw print pieces on your canvas backdrop so you know just where everything will go. Then glue pawprint in place. Place it on an easel or add a hanger, and it’s good to go!

Isn’t this just the most darling doggy decor in honor of your little love bug?! And it’s one of those projects that’s just so simple yet elegant – and it’s pawfectly suited for anywhere in your house – in your kitchen, the dog’s area, a child’s room…on shelves, etc.
