DIY Patriotic Pup Lovers Wreath

It’s that time of the year for more star-spangled fun! And we’re celebrating this week with another Dollar Tree inspired DIY that reflects our love of pups and country. Yeehaw!

Of course this red, white and blue beauty is an easy-peasy hot glue crafter’s dream. In no time at all, you’ll wrap, twist and stick together your favorite fabrics, rope and ribbon to make a Patriotic Pup Lovers Wreath in honor of your little fluffy firecracker.

You’ll need…

  • 12″ Heart-shaped wreath
  • Cotton nautical rope (3 pkgs of .5 inch thick cotton nautical rope OR 2 pkgs of .4 inch thick)
  • Various cotton fabrics in red or blue (doggie themed is best)
  • 2.5 inch burlap ribbon
  • Hot glue gun and sticks
  • Scissors and pinking shears
Step 1

Wrap one end of the rope around the middle rung at the bottom of the heart wreath form and glue it in place.

Step 2

Begin wrapping the rope around and around the two inner rungs as you work your way up the side section of the wreath. Be sure to keep the rope tightly wound as you go. Stop when you get to the end of this section (before the curve).

Step 3

Once you reach the curved section, wrap the rope completely around the middle rung. Then wrap it around the two inner rungs. Continue with this alternating technique (wrapping the just middle rung, then the inner two rungs) until you complete the outer curved section.

Step 4

Finish the last little section at the top of the wreath using the same technique that you did in Step 1. Continue around the wreath until the other side is complete.

Step 5

Use your pinking shears to cut out a bunch of blue (or red) fabric into strips so they’re roughly 2-3 inches wide and about 6 inches long. Fold each strip in half and cut off a small triangle on the ends to make dovetails.

Step 6

With the fabric folded in half, scrunch up the folded end and glue it to the back of the wreath – about midway down the rope – with the pokey dovetails pointing outward. Work your way completely around the wreath.

Step 7

Flip the wreath over so you’re looking at the front. Pull all of the dovetail ends of fabric up over the outer rung.

Step 8

Cut the burlap ribbon into 5 inch strips (you’ll need about 28 or so) and give them cute little dovetails, too. With the wreath facing down, tuck a ribbon under the outer rung, scrunch the bottom edge, fold it in half, and glue it in place. Do the same with the other ribbon strips, but overlap each ribbon as you go. Note, be sure to leave a space empty at the top center of the heart, ‘cuz that spot will be used later for the hanger.

Step 9

Next, cut about 12 – 13 pieces of red fabric (or ribbon) that are about 1 – 1.5 inches wide and 3 inches long. Oh and be sure there’s a dovetail on one end! If you’d like, you can vary the widths of fabric or ribbon to make your wreath a bit more rustic looking.

Step 10

Time to sprinkle a little dash of red around the wreath. With the wreath facing right side up, tuck the square end of the red fabric strips in between the blue fabric layer and the burlap ribbon layer. Vary the spots around the wreath for interest. Once you’re happy with their location, glue them down onto the burlap ribbon so the dovetail is pointing out.

Step 11

Cut a long strip of red fabric (or ribbon) that’s about 3 feet long. Tuck one end under the outer rung at the very top center of the wreath, pull it through, and tie a knot to make the hanger. Trim any excess. Be sure to fluff and zhuzh the blue fabric layer before you hang it, to give it some pizazz!

Such a fun way to show off your patriotic pup-lovin’ pride with this Americana door charmer all Summer long! Let the backyard BBQs begin!
