What To Do If Your Pup Runs Away or Is Stolen

Imagine this… you open up the front door to sign for a package delivery and your dog bolts out the front door after a squirrel. You run past the delivery guy and call after her, but it’s too late.  She’s only focused on one thing – the squirrel chase. You simply can’t keep up. After a trip in the car up and down your neighborhood streets, there’s no sign of her. She’s gone.

No need to fear. All hope is not lost! With a little luck and a helping hand, there’s a chance your girl will make it back home. This short list of tips will point you in the right direction and hopefully get your pup back home in a hurry.

TIP: As a preventative measure for those pups who tend to be escape artists, you can try this roll bar top on your fence as an extra safety measure to keep him or her in the yard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAC_JTdsTCw

Regardless of whether your pup has run away, is lost or stolen, here are some ideas to consider:

  • Ask your local fire department if they have a drone with thermal imaging to help locate your pup. (Or does another fire department nearby have one?) We learned of a recent case in Wisconsin where a puppy was thrown from a vehicle in a bad accident and it was found safe using the thermal imaging camera on the drone.
  • Place some food and a blanket (or some clothes) that has your scent on it outside your house. Often the food and/or familiar scent will bring them home.
  • Contact pizza delivery restaurants, the post office, a local school bus garage, the highway department and all who travel the roads.
  • Call local vets, dog control and shelters and let them know the dog is missing.
  • Post flyers with a recent photo of the pup around the neighborhood, on local group or business social media sites.
  • Check local classified ads for puppies for sale and contact local TV stations to see if you can place a post on their website about you or your friend’s missing pet.

Sometimes the worst happens and you have strong suspicions that foul play is at hand. If you think the pup has been stolen, definitely go to the police station and file a police report. And be sure to ask around the neighborhood to see if anyone saw the theft take place or any suspicious activity.

It can be so devastating when your pup runs away from home. Know that our thoughts are with you. Try to keep your chin up and do your best to never lose faith. Hopefully, these tips will come in handy and help reunite you with your loved one again very soon!
