Fluffy Dollar Tree Wireframe Pumpkin

Okay, summer crafting may officially be over, but we’re not putting away ALL those summer supplies just yet…

This week’s Dollar Tree DIY starts with something you probably wouldn’t expect to find anywhere near a fall craft… a fluffy orange Hawaiian lei! Wrapped around a simple pumpkin wireframe, those soft little petals suddenly take on a whole new personality and create the cutest, fluffiest pumpkin.

Add a crinkly green stem made from crepe paper streamers and a big, festive fall bow, and you’ve got a colorful pumpkin decoration that’s quick, budget-friendly, and proof that sometimes the best craft supplies are hiding in another aisle.

You’ll need…

  1.  Cover the wireframe in fabric, gluing and tacking it down all around the outside edge. Pull the fabric snug as you go to eliminate as many folds and wrinkles as possible. Trim any excess fabric.
  2. Make a single cut into the lei so you can open it up into one long strand. Depending on the lei, you may have to glue the ends to prevent the lei from unraveling. Repeat this for all leis.
  3. Starting in the upper left (or right) edge of the pumpkin, glue the end of one lei down and continue to adhere it along the pumpkin’s ribs in a vertical up-and-down pattern. Glue the next lei down in a place that meets the end of the previous one. Continue gluing the leis until the entire pumpkin is covered. If desired, trim any leis around the edges that might be out of position to enhance the pumpkin’s shape.
  4. Wrap the pumpkin’s stem with the crepe paper streamer. Start by wrapping the streamer flat against the stem until it’s covered nicely around the sides and top. Glue the paper down from time to time so it doesn’t shift out of place. Continue wrapping, but this time loosely twist the streamer as you wrap it around and around again. This will help add some “bulk” to the stem to make it bigger and give it a nice rustic texture.
  5. Now let’s make a super-sized bow using the two pre-made bows! (Note: If your bows have a thick central loop, you can cut one of the central loops off of one bow. If not, you can skip this bit.) Remove the tails off of the other bow and glue the loops on top of the other bow (the one without a center loop). Take the tails you removed before and glue them to the back of your bigger bow, if desired.
  6. Attach your bow to the top of your pumpkin, hang your festive masterpiece, and enjoy!

We love a DIY that makes you look at everyday craft supplies in a whole new way! Who knew a few fluffy summer leis, a party streamer, and a simple wire form could turn into such a fun fall pumpkin? So before you walk past those leftover summer goodies at Dollar Tree, take another look. Your next favorite fall decoration might just be hiding there!
