DIY Firecracker Flowers Dog Wreath

We adore fabric flowers! So today, we’ve got a fun DIY for the Fourth of July that uses a no-sew technique to create colorful fabric flowers in red, white and blue. Hint, hint – hot glue lovers, this is for you!

With a simple twist of the wrist, you can turn a few Fido-themed fabric scraps into flowers that resemble fireworks. Add these to your favorite wreath for a festive touch – and you’ve got your very own DIY Firecracker Flowers Dog Wreath.

Let’s give it a whirl!

You’ll need…

  • 14″ Willow wreath from Amazon or Dollar Tree
  • Various cotton fabrics in red, white or blue (doggie themed is best)
  • 1.5 inch ribbon in red, white or blue
  • Several sticks from your backyard
  • Hot glue gun and sticks
  • Scissors and pinking shears
  • Small pinwheel (optional)

Step 1

Cut out various fabrics into strips so they’re roughly 3-4 inches wide and about 24-36 inches long.

Step 2

With the wrong side of the fabric facing up, glue along one edge of the fabric. Fold the fabric over so the edges meet and glue them together. Then, to make the flower petals, take your scissors and cut slits along the entire folded edge of the fabric tube.

Step 3

Next, place a dab of hot glue on the end of a stick and adhere one end of the fabric strip to it – with the petals facing up. Continue working your way around the stick by adding hot glue and wrapping the fabric around the stick to glue it in place.

To create a long skinny flower, work the fabric petals down the stick with each rotation.

And to create a fuller flower, keep winding the fabric around itself as you glue it down. Feel free to change things up and add a second fabric to give the flower a two-toned effect.

Step 4

Wrap a festive ribbon around the wreath and secure it in place. Then begin to glue and tuck your flowers into position, creating a small bouquet.

Step 5

It’s time for the final embellishments! Add a bow using a festive dog themed ribbon. Or in this example, we took a strip of dog themed fabric, tied a knot in the center and clipped the ends to make the “tails” of a bow. Glue any embellishments to the wreath and top everything off with a tiny patriotic pinwheel!

This darling little wreath is packed with lots of Americana charm. We absolutely love how quick and easy it is to make. The spinning pinwheel is such a fun touch and the flowery fireworks are bursting with puppy pizzazz! Here’s to a happy July 4th!!
