DIY Applique Dog Bandana

Bandanas are fun, fashionable and just what your pup needs for celebrating a birthday, the holidays, or a favorite sports team!

In less than half an hour you can create a personalized DIY Applique Dog Bandana. No sewing skills required! And with Valentine’s Day a few short weeks away, we thought it’d be sweet for our pups strut to their stuff in this adorable attire.

You’ll need…

Two coordinating cotton fabrics (one lighter and one darker in color), ¼ – ½ yard each

Double-sided fusible adhesive tape, ½ inch wide

Scissors and/or pinking shears

Iron

Measuring tape

Step 1

The size of your bandana will depend on the size of your dog’s neck. As a guideline, you’ll start with a square piece of fabric for the base that is:

  • 14 to 18 inch in size for small to medium sized dogs
  • 22 to 26 inch in size for large to extra-large pups

Fold your square in half (diagonally) until the two points align and cut along the fold, so that you end up with two triangles of fabric. You’ll only need one triangle for this project. So the other can be set aside or used to make a second bandana.

Step 2

Using the second (coordinating) fabric, cut out a small shape for the applique. In our example, we’ve cut out pieces to make a paw print. But you could cut a heart or a star or a flower… really any simple shape will do!

Step 3

Now, line the back of your applique with fusible tape and iron it onto your bandana. That’s it! In a few short moments, it will cool down and be ready to wear!

Tie loosely around your dog’s neck, creating a chic double knot. Be sure that it’s not too snug. You’ll know it fits perfectly when you can easily get a few of your fingers in between their neck and the cloth.

This doggy wardrobe favorite is so fun, stylish and extremely easy to make. Best of all, the applique makes it the perfect fashion accessory for any occasion… and uniquely yours!
