DIY Rustic Dog Name Sign

This is one of our favorite projects to-date! Really oh-so-EASY and you’ll just LOVE the way it turns out!

Basically, what you want to do is find items with a little rustic charm that can be used for letters to spell out your dog’s name and secure them to a solid backdrop. You don’t have to plunk down a ton of sawbucks either. Many items can be found lying around your house or purchased for a couple of dollars.

The best thing about this project is you get to think creatively! Almost anything goes!! For example, one or two objects in your pet’s name can be used in place of a letter, as long as they have a similar shape to the letter they’re replacing. Or you could pick a theme, like “Spring” or “The Beach” or “Christmas” and find objects that go together based on your theme. The sky’s the limit to what you can make!

Once you’re done, you’ll have a one-of-a-kind beautiful piece of art that celebrates a very special pup! Or a wonderful memorial gift for a friend whose pup has crossed the rainbow bridge.

The process is pretty self explanatory, but let’s break it down step by step…

In the FB Live we recorded (links below at the end of this tutorial), you’ll see we made several different wall hangings – so be sure to check it out for ideas and inspiration. For this tutorial, we’ll walkthrough steps for the one we made for DAISY.

What we used:

3 different drawer pulls from Hobby Lobby (for the D, I and S)

Metal flower clip from Hobby Lobby

Wood slice that was cut from a tree

Twigs from the backyard

An old fence board found that was lying around the garden shed

Sawtooth hanger

Wood varnish (optional – This isn’t needed if you want to keep the board more rustic and natural.)

Instructions:

First, the board was cleaned, sanded and varnished to bring out the character in the wood. Then a small sawtooth hanger was attached in the back so the final piece could be hung on the wall when it was done.

If you don’t have an old board lying around, you could use a pretty picture frame without the glass and modpodge a piece of scrapbook paper to the background to give it some pizzaz. Or find a small chalkboard or dinner tray for the backdrop…whatever fits your fancy!

Once the board was ready, the fancy drawer pull shaped like a D was hot glued in place.

Then the metal flower (used for the A) was hot glued where it seemed to look best.

The long skinny drawer pull was glued next for the I, followed by the S-shaped pull.

Finally, for the Y… the wood slice was glued down as a “base” and then a Y-shaped twig was glued on top of the wood slice.

That’s it! And just look how it turned out! HOW CUTE IS THAT?!!

So, whacha waitin’ for? Go find letters hiding around your house or nearest crafty shop and let the magic begin.

Don’t forget to share your pictures with us below or on FB. Purty-please with sugar on top?!! We’d love to see what you can do!
