DIY Wood Disc Felt Sunflowers

Don’t ya just love how neutrals go with everything? Fuzzy felt is so warm and cozy – and the natural wood adds the perfect rustic touch for this dog lover’s craft. One quick glance at this farmhouse style bouquet and everyone is sure to know who has captured your heart!

These DIY Wood Disc Felt Sunflowers are made from real wood slices and not only look cute and cozy, they’re really simple to create! Oh, and just wait to see how you can use them in a variety of ways around the house.

You’ll need…

  • Hot glue gun and sticks
  • 3/16 x 12 inch wooden dowels or random sticks from your yard (optional)
  • Sawtooth hangers (optional)
Step 1

Start by cutting a bunch of felt petals. To help ensure petals are all about the same size, fold one felt sheet in half (widthwise) and cut along the fold. Next, cut the two halves down the middle, so you end up with four long strips of felt that are about 3 inches wide. Cut rectangles out of the strips that are 2 – 2.5 inches in size.

Step 2

Fold the rectangles in half and make a curved cut along the open edge to create petal shapes. One end of the petal should have a pointed tip and the other end should be flat.

Depending on the size of your wood slice, you’ll need roughly 20+ petals to make a sunflower.

Step 3

Fold the flat end of the petal in half and then fold the raw edges of felt back toward the fold to make a zigzag pattern.

Step 4

Glue the base of the petal to the side of a wood disc. Hold in place for a moment until the glue sets.

Step 5

Continue gluing petals around the disc until the disc’s edge is covered. Be sure not to glue petals too closely together. And if you place them a little randomly, it’ll give the flower a more natural, organic look.

Step 6

Now you could take a sharpie and draw a paw print on the wood disc or your dog’s name – they’d make a beautiful table decoration or candle holder. You can also attach a sawtooth hanger to the back and hang them on the wall. (Wouldn’t these be adorable in a nursery or above your dog’s bowls?)

Or if you’d like to make a beautiful bouquet like ours… simply cut a 3 inch piece of green dog ribbon, scrunch up the bottom and glue it onto a stick as a leaf. Then add a glob of hot glue to the back of the wood disc and attach the stick (and add a bunch more glue) to give your flower a pretty stem. For a more realistic look, you can attach the stick at an angle by propping up the tail end of the stick on a stack of books or a shoebox while the hot glue dries.

So simple – yet simply gorgeous! Look how warm and wonderful and homey they turn out! And wouldn’t these make the easiest (and oh-so-pretty) gifts? So once you’ve made a few for yourself, why not create a couple for all of those other dog lovers in your life.
