26 May Americana Stars
You know sometimes crafters just gotta craft. 😉 Do you ever find days when you’re in the mood to make something cute for the season, but you don’t necessarily have the time or energy for a big complicated project?
This week’s Dollar Tree DIY is exactly what you’re looking for! Nothing complicated. No fancy techniques. Just a few wooden stars layered together, some ribbon and twine for wrapping, and a couple bead tassels that somehow come together into the sweetest little patriotic shelf sitter.
It has that cozy red, white, and blue Americana feel that works perfectly on a shelf, mantel, tiered tray, or tucked into a summer vignette. And with the USA turning 250 this year, that’s something we just can’t get enough of!!
You’ll need…
- Cut the dangling wood beads from your stars and set them aside.
- Next, layer your red, white and blue stars together, with the white star on top and the red and blue on the bottom. Stand them up together as a group so the bottoms are level.
- Holding tight to the red and white stars, remove the blue star from the grouping. With a firm grip, flip the red and white stars over and take a pencil to trace onto the back of the white star where the two stars overlap.
- Add glue to that space on the back of the white star and glue the red and white stars together. (Stand the stars back up to ensure the bottoms are even.)
- Now add the blue star back into the grouping so that the red and blue stars touch each other. Stand them up again to make sure the bottoms are level. Then flip everything over and trace where the blue star overlaps onto the back of the white star.
- Add glue to the other side of the white star and adhere the blue star onto that space. It helps to stand the stars back up again to ensure they line up correctly before the glue hardens.
- Cut a length of red ribbon, white twine and blue ribbon that’s long enough to wrap around the front of the three stars. Glue them in place.
- Now to make some beaded tassels! Thread a red bead, white bead and blue bead onto a piece of white twine that’s about 8 inches long. Tie one so the beads don’t fall off.
- Fold the twine in half and tuck the loop into the top of the wood star. Adjust the length of your beaded tassel to where you like it, then glue the loop to the back of the star to secure it in place.
- Use red, white and blue beads to make a second tassel at the other end of the twine. And you’re done!
This is one of those crafts that reminds us why we love making things in the first place. Simple, relaxing, budget-friendly, and somehow still ridiculously cute when it’s finished.
