23 Jul Which Essential Oils Are Safe For Dogs — And How to Use Them
A popular home-scenting tool, essential oils are commonly used in air fresheners and diffusers to provide a fresh scent to any home. But beyond just scent, humans also use these oils as a holistic treatment method for non-life threatening ailments like insomnia and anxiety.
When our dogs are feeling depressed or anxious, we want to do everything in our power to help them. So as essential oils have become more popular for alternative medicine, the question has naturally arisen whether or not they can be used on our four-legged friends. The answer is a little complicated — like anything, oils need to be used safely and carefully, but can provide a treatment to dogs just like they do in humans.

How to Apply Essential Oils to Dogs
- Oil Diffuser: Diffusers can be bought or made at home, and release the oil into the air. Be sure to monitor your dog’s behavior around the scent to make sure they like it and respond well.
- Topically: Dilute with a carrier oil before applying, and use the following guidelines:
- For cats and small dogs: 9:1 carrier oil to essential oil
- For medium-sized dogs: 4:1 carrier to essential oil
- For large dogs: 3:1 carrier to essential oil
- For large animals such as horses and cattle: begin with 1:1 carrier to essential oil
- Mixed with Soap: Mixing the essential oil with your dog’s shampoo or soap can make a fun and great-smelling bath time experience.
