29 Aug DIY Sunflower Snuffle Dog Toy
As you may know, snuffle toys are a big hit around here! Made with lots of floppy layers that hide tasty treats or kibbles, snuffle dog toys are brain games or puzzles that can keep your pup engaged, happy and healthy.
During a recent trip to Hobby Lobby, we came across these colorful paper plate holders and knew they’d make the perfect base for a DIY Sunflower Snuffle Toy! Their round shape and small size also means this project is super quick and easy to make. Definitely a fun way to celebrate the last days of summer with your pups!
You’ll need…
- 1 sturdy paper plate holder
- 1/8 yard each of yellow and brown fleece
- A sharp pair of scissors
- Dry treats or kibbles only (wet food is a no-no, to avoid a mess and mold)
- Cut fleece into strips about 7-8 inches long and 1 inch wide. You’ll need about 20 brown strips and 60 yellow ones.
- Start in the center with the brown fleece strips. Pull both ends of a fleece strip through holes in the plate holder and tie a knot to secure it. Work your way around the center until you’ve tied one row of brown fleece.
- Then tie yellow fleece strips around the plate until it’s covered – about three rows.
- Fill the plate with your dog’s favorite dry food kibbles or small treats and let the fun begin!
This is a game to play together, so you’re able to closely supervise your dog’s play when using the toy. Note, dogs left alone with the sunflower could chew bits of the fleece strips off and possibly swallow them…which could be quite harmful.
Once playtime is over, take the toy outside and give it a thorough shake to remove any remaining food bits. For cleaning, hand wash with soap and water. Fluff up the fleece and let it air dry.
This handmade snuffle toy is such a great way to give your dog his food or treats, while providing a brain stimulating activity. Your pup will love stopping to smell this sweet flower, so they can search for all the hidden treasures!
