06 Sep DIY Personalized Pup Planters
It’s time to break out your brushes and release your inner artist in honor of our BFFFs! ‘Cuz today we’re gonna make some adorable DIY Personalized Pup Planters! These little garden guard dogs are just too cute to resist.
Now where’d ya put those darn brushes? hmmm…
You’ll need…
- Acrylic paints in your pups colors
- Two 6 inch terracotta pots
- Faux leather, brown felt or leather scraps for ears
- Brushes
- Pencil
- Black or brown Sharpie marker
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun and sticks
- Varnish (optional)
Step 1
Before painting, decide which pot is for the head (keep this one upright – that’s where the plant will go when you’re done!) and which one will be for the body (turn it upside-down). Then, paint both pots using your pup’s general colors and markings for inspiration!
In this example, our Beagle is mostly white, so the exterior of the pots were first painted all over in white. If you’d like to give your planter a more rustic feel, paint the brushstrokes in hap-hazard directions, leaving some of the terracotta showing in spots.
Step 2
Grab a pencil and trace the face as well as your pup’s brown spots and markings. Then finish painting the pots.
Step 3
Once everything has dried, use a Sharpie to outline shapes (like the front paws and tail) and for details on the face. (If you’d like your planter to have a little extra protection from the weather, now would be the time to give your pots a nice coat of exterior varnish.)
Step 4
Now cut out the ears using faux leather, fabric, felt, leather scraps… whatever you have on hand…and hot glue them in place on the head.
Step 5
Hot glue the two pots together and you’re done!
Oh so cute, aren’t they?! And the best part is you’ve just made an adorable mini-me version of your pup to place in the garden to look after the geraniums and greet the squirrels.
This project would also make a lovely tribute to a beloved pup who’s crossed the rainbow bridge. Everytime you go outside to water your plants, your best fur-ever friend will be there to warm your heart and share a smile.
