14 Jun DIY Paws & Stripes Placemat Pillow
The stores are filled with so many cute things this year for the 4th of July! During a recent trip to Hobby Lobby, we found the most adorable placemats in red, white and blue. They have some really nice cotton ones with two layers of fabric – and for this project, that’s exactly what you’re looking for!
The ones we chose have red and white stripes on one side and a field of bright stars on the back. We knew in an instant they’d make the prettiest no sew throw pillows for the upcoming holiday.
To complete the American Flag look we’re goin’ for, you’ll want to grab some fabric that’s navy with white stars for the embellishment. Rather than stand in line to purchase a small scrap from a bolt of fabric, we found a second placemat that fit the bill perfectly. Just wait ‘til you see what we do with it! The end result is soooo pretty! 😍
You’ll need…
- Red and white striped cotton placemat
- Blue and white stars placemat (or small scrap of fabric)
- Poly-Fil stuffing
- Fabric glue
- Scissors
- Seam ripper or Xacto knife
- Cut out a paw print shape from the navy and white stars fabric. Basically, you’ll want to cut a large round circular shape for the paw pad and four smaller circles for the toes.
- Make lots of super-tiny cuts along the edges and pull the threads to give each shape a fringed look.
- Adhere the paw print to the upper left corner of the placemat (striped side up).
- Use the seam ripper to gently cut along the placemat’s edge and make a nice sized opening (at least 4-5 inches).
- Stuff your placemat with a good amount of Poly-Fil. Make sure to get into the corners!
- Once you’re happy with how full and fluffy the pillow is, close up the opening with a bit of fabric glue. Pinch the opening closed and let everything dry.
You’ll love how quick and easy it is to turn your favorite place mats into custom designer-looking pillows – for a fraction of the cost! The adorable doggie paw print adds such a fun and festive touch to this pillow. Place it on your sofa, loveseat, bed, hallway bench… basically anywhere you want a little rustic Americana charm!
