08 May DIY Dog Mom Gift – Key To My Heart
Looking for a very special Mother’s Day gift for your favorite dog mom? Look no further! This precious DIY “Key To My Heart” Dog Mom Gift is filled with all the same boundless, tail-waggin’, always-by-your-side kinda love that our pups shower us with every day.
Such a sweet little treasure for the dearest dog mom in your life that honors a current pup or even a rainbow furry friend that lives forever in their hearts… Once you give this project a try, you’ll know just why everyone oohs and aahs over your thoughtful gift!
You’ll need…
- 5×7 inch picture frame
- 1 sheet of your favorite scrapbook paper
- 1 sheet of ruled notebook paper
- 1 piece of chipboard
- School glue
- Glue dots or double-sided tape
- Embroidery thread or bakers twine
- Antique brass key
- Scissors
- Xacto knife
- Pencil, marker or pen
- Brown ink (optional) – use it to “ink” the edges of the message just to add a little depth and character!
Step 1
Cut a piece of colorful, striped or sparkly scrapbook paper to fit your picture frame and insert it behind the glass.
Step 2
Cut both the lined school paper and chipboard a bit smaller than the scrapbook paper – let’s say roughly 3 ½ inches by 5 ½ inches in size. Glue the two pieces together to help firm up the school paper so it can eventually hold the weight of your key.
Tip! If you want to make your little paper a little more antique-looking, you can use an ink pad to give the edges a slightly burned look or you can use 120 grit sandpaper to rough up the corners and edges a bit.
Step 3
Do a quick sketch of a paw print in the upper right corner and cut it out. An Xacto knife makes it easy to cut out the paw print shape.
Step 4
Wrap the embroidery thread around the center several times and then tie on the old fashioned key.
Step 5
Write your message “Dogs hold the” above the key and “to my heart” below. If you don’t want to use pen or pencil for this, you could easily use small alphabet letter stickers instead.
Step 6
Grab some double-sided tape or sticky glue dots to adhere the message board directly to the outside of the glass on your picture frame. And enjoy!
You could definitely slip a photo behind the paw-shaped opening in the chipboard or use another piece of coordinating paper, but it’s perfectly ok to keep things simple and just have the background paper show through.
To all the amazing and caring dog moms out there, this one’s for you! Happy Mother’s Day!
