22 Oct DIY Halloween Jester Collar for Dogs
With Halloween right around the corner, we thought it’d be fun to create a quick costume for your pup. This simple jester collar for dogs is not only wickedly cute, but it’s a great way to use up those fabric scraps!
You’ll need…
- ⅜ inch black or white paw print ribbon
- ¼ – ½ yard paw print cotton fabric
- Wool blend felt (orange)
- ¼ or ½ inch orange and black pom poms
- Fabric glue or hot glue gun and sticks
- Scissors and/or pinking shears
- Measuring tape
- ⅗ inch small jingle bells (optional)
Step 1
The size of your festive collar will depend on the size of your dog. Loosely measure the ribbon around your pup’s neck and write that measurement down. Add 16 inches to your dog’s neck size to get the total length of ribbon you’ll need. Cut ribbon to size. (You’ll trim any excess later.)
Step 2
Using pinking shears, cut various pennant-shaped triangles from the fabric and felt. Triangles should be roughly 3 inches wide and about 3 – 6 inches long (shorter length for smaller pups and longer pointy length for larger dogs).
Step 3
Line up felt triangles in a row so they match the measurement of your pup’s neck. (Add or remove triangles, as needed.)
Step 4
Line up your fabric triangles in between the felt ones so that the points of your triangles alternate – felt, fabric, felt, fabric, etc. Glue the fabric ones along the top so they adhere to the tops of the felt triangles below.
Step 5
Glue the center of your ribbon to the top center triangle. Then continue gluing until all triangles are attached to the ribbon.
Step 6
Next adhere a pom pom (or hand-sew a small jingle bell) to the bottom of each triangle.
Step 7
Let everything dry. Then, tie the ribbon loosely around your dog’s neck in a bow. Be sure that it’s not too snug. You’ll know it fits perfectly when you can easily get a few of your fingers in between their neck and the ribbon. Trim any excess ribbon, as needed.
Whether you’re out trick-or-treating, attending a Halloween pawty, or spending a chill night at home, who needs over-the-top dog costumes? No matter how you celebrate, your doggie is sure to win best dressed!
