02 Mar Best Dog Lover Secrets for a Clean House
If you happen to be one who wakes up everyday lovingly covered in fur – and then finds yourself side stepping across the floor covered in tennis balls, dog bones and squeaky toys as you work your way to the kitchen – here are some tidy tips and tricks for you!
Together with cleaning expert Julie Holmes of Unique Pet Care, we’ve neatly organized a list of our favorite dog lover hacks for keeping a house clean.
- First step is to try and keep the mess outside. A good rule of thumb is to have a good quality doormat outside and then a washable rug at the door to capture dirt as your pup walks in. Shake them out, vacuum or spot clean, as needed.
- Keep a DIY muddy paw mitt or old towel near the door to quickly wipe your pup’s feet before they come in.
- If you ask our pups, you can never have too many blankies! Not only are they perfect for snuggling, but they hold a tidy secret. You can cover sofas and chairs with your throws and comfy quilts to keep the doggie smell and hair off your furniture. There are even waterproof dog blankets you can use to protect your bed.
- Do your best to wash your dog’s bed and blankets regularly. These are magnets for hair, dirt and odors. The nice thing is when they get really messy, you can easily just stick them in the wash.
- Another important step to keeping both your dog and home smelling fresh is to give your dog a bath or take them to the groomer regularly. Just be careful not to bathe them too often – as this can strip oils from their skin.
- Do your best to keep clutter to a minimum. With the never-ending pile of dog toys in the house, it helps to have a basket, DIY doggie toy box or old dog bed to keep everything corralled. Every so often, it’s good to check toys for rips, wear and tear, and discard any that are worn-out. You can also donate ones in good condition to the local shelter.
- Have the right products on hand. When it comes to cleaning your house, it’s so important to get vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners and carpet solutions that are specifically designed to clean up after pets. Check out our article on tools for a fur-free home to find the right ones for you.
- Finally, keep a spray stain remover that’s designed to tackle pet odors and stains close by, so you can use it in an instant! You never know when your dog could eat something they shouldn’t have that results on the carpet. And even if your pup is housebroken, accidents happen.
Creating a clean and clutter-free home oasis with a house full of fluffy furkids is within your reach – and much easier than you think! Now is the perfect time to give your space a soothing spruce. All you need is a few minutes a day and some organizational picks and tricks that make you smile.
Here’s to a refreshed cozy space with your cuddly canine!
