10 Nov Dollar Tree DIY Gingerbread Dog House
The idea of gingerbread houses at Christmas time brings back so many holiday memories from childhood. They are so easy and FUN to decorate – with all the swirls, curls and polka dots, you can really let your imagination soar! This year, we’ve got the perfect way to make one that lasts and lasts. All you need is a little paint and a basic wooden house found in the craft section at your local Dollar Tree.
This was the first time using puffy paint in a while and it takes some gettin’ used to. But part of the fun of crafting is trying new things (well, old things you haven’t done in a looooong time so they’re basically new again – haha!). Fortunately, anything goes when icing a gingerbread house, so no matter what you do it still looks precious and handmade.
Of course, we couldn’t just make any ‘ole house for this project! It had to be the cutest little Dollar Tree DIY Gingerbread Dog House you’ve ever seen!
You’ll need…
- Remove any embellishments, if any, and give the house at least two coats of paint.
- This next step is optional, but we found it helpful to sketch out the design ahead of time using a white watercolor pencil. Any pencil will do, but the watercolor marks can be wiped away with a damp cloth once the puffy paint dries.
- Trace the sketch design using white paint. Puffy paint gives it a wonderful faux icing look to the house!
Now that you see how simple these are to make, you could have yourself an entire village of gingerbread dog houses all over the house – along the mantel, as a table centerpiece, in the entryway, or across the top of a bookshelf. Tuck some greenery in and around the houses and you have a quick and festive display for the season!
