15 Oct Dollar Tree Sweater PUPkin DIY
Have you been to Dollar Tree lately to check out their fun Fall decor? Today’s craft is inspired by a Happy Harvest pumpkin sign we found during a recent trip to the store.
This little cutie is darling as-is, but we thought it would be the pawfect candidate for a fuzzy sweater pumpkin makeover! All you need to make this quick and easy Dollar Tree DIY is an old cozy sweater, some felt scraps and jute twine.
And the fun part of this Sweater PUPkin is that you can put any mutt-rific saying on the front you want! For ideas, you’re welcome to click here to download the printable stencils from Supreme Source – we used the paw print one on this project.
You’ll need…
- Knit sweater
- Pumpkin-shaped sign from Dollar Tree
- Wool felt sheets
- Hot glue gun and sticks
- Scissors
- Embellishment items such as ribbon, fall leaves, etc.
- White paint (optional)
Prep Step: When using a white or light-colored sweater, you’ll want to give the pumpkin base a couple coats of white paint before moving on to the next steps.
Step 1
Cut a portion of sweater large enough to cover the pumpkin. Then, wrap the sweater around the front, be sure the sweater cables look straight (up and down) on the front, and flip it over so you can glue the sweater edges along the backside.
The best place to start gluing is at the bottom of the pumpkin. Pull snuggly around the base as you go. You’ll want the sweater to snuggly follow the lumpy curves of the pumpkin’s bottom shape, so they’re apparent when looking at the pumpkin from the front.
Ya kinda have to glue stuff down, then flip the pumpkin over to make sure everything looks good. Then flip it over again to finish gluing on the back.
Step 2
Next, fold over the sweater’s edge at the top of the pumpkin – making sure the sweater cables look straight (up and down) on the front – and glue down the folded edge onto the back of the pumpkin around the stem.
Step 3
Now that the top and bottom of the sweater are secured, it’s time to glue the sides. Start in the middle of one side and gently pull the sweater so the cable pattern nearest the edge has a slight curve to it. Glue sweater in place on the backside of the pumpkin. Cut off any excess sweater to remove some of the bulk as you continue to glue the sweater down along the side. Repeat process for the other side.
Step 4
Wrap and glue jute twine around the pumpkin stem until it’s completely covered.
Step 5
Cut out your festive saying using felt and glue it onto the front of the pumpkin. For this example, we thought it’d be fun to spell out BOO! using paw prints for the O’s.
Step 6
Embellish your cozy pumpkin with leaves, berries and/or dog-themed ribbons, etc. to add a little more Fall flair.
These really dress up your fall decor! Super easy, and we love the fun doggie details and the warm fuzzy texture they add to any room. Makes a great evening project!
