15 May Americana Ribbon Flag
This week’s craft is an all-American cutie! All you need is a basic wood plank (we picked up ours from Dollar Tree!), a stash of red and white ribbons, and a scrap of star-spangled fabric in your favorite shade of blue. Of course, if your fabric has teeny paw prints on it, all the better! 😉
We love that this craft is super beginner-friendly and totally customizable!
You’ll love the result! 🙌
In no time at all, you’ll have a sweet little wall hanging that’s rustic, whimsical, and perfect for your holiday gatherings. Whether you’re hosting friends or just adding a festive touch at home, this Americana Ribbon Flag is a quick and easy Fourth of July DIY that celebrates stars, stripes…and your furry best friends. 🐾
You’ll need…
- Small rectangular 4×8 inch wood plank
- White acrylic paint
- Scraps of blue doggie-themed fabric (fat quarter in size)
- Mod Podge and a brush
- Various red and white ribbons, like this plaid, burlap, gingham, polka dot, rick rack, daisy lace trim, etc.
- Fabric glue or hot glue
- Scissors
- White jute string
- Wood beads
- Stapler
- Paint the top and sides of your wood plank in white. Let dry.
- Cut a piece of your blue fabric that’s about ⅓ the size of the board.
- Starting from the left side of the board, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge so that it’s about a ¼ inch shy of the fabric size. Basically, you don’t want the right edge of the fabric glued down so you can tuck the ends of your ribbons under it in the following step.
- Lay the blue fabric in place, smoothing out all the wrinkles as you secure it to the board. Fold any excess fabric around the top and sides of the board and glue the excess to the back of the board.
- Cut a bunch of red and white ribbons and trims so they are longer than the remaining 2/3rds of the board. Lay out a design so that you’re starting and ending with a red ribbon, then alternate with white and red trims in the middle until the “stripes” on your flag are complete. Once you’re happy with the design, glue everything in place. If you’d like, you can tuck the ends of each ribbon under the blue fabric and wrap the other ends under the board for a more polished look.
- To make a hanger, string 12 small wood beads onto a piece of twine and tie knots at both ends. You can either glue the ends to the back of the board or staple them down, if that’s easier.
Hang it in your favorite spot and enjoy! Now you have a sweet flag that celebrates both your love of country and your four-legged friends. Whether it’s the 4th of July, Memorial Day, or any sunny summer day, this little patriotic charmer adds a festive touch to your decor.
