11 Sep Fall Felt Flower Tower

We’re not quite ready to jump into all-things-fall just yet… 

The temps are telling us that summer still has a little life left in it. 😉 But there’s something about this time of year that makes us want to start adding warmer colors and cozy touches around the house.

This week’s Dollar Tree DIY is the perfect in-between project. Using rustic wooden craft crates, beautiful fall florals, and handmade felt flowers, we’re creating a charming centerpiece that celebrates the changing seasons without rushing them. Our favorite part? The felt sunflowers! They’re made with a simple looping technique that gives each bloom a soft, full look you’ll want to use again and again. 

It’s quick, budget-friendly, and a beautiful way to welcome the first hints of fall to your table, mantel, or end table.

You’ll need…

• Felt sheets in white, yellow, gold, orange, raspberry, and purple
• Wood skewers
• 1 large and 1 small wood craft crate
• Brown acrylic paint and brush
• Floral foam
• Faux flowers in fall colors
• Fabric glue
• Hot glue gun and sticks
• Scissors

1.  To make the felt sunflowers, cut a small strip of yellow, orange or white felt that is about 1 x 7 inches in size. Start rolling the felt at one end; add a bit of glue every so often, and continue rolling until you reach the other end and glue it down so the felt doesn’t unwind. This will be the center of your sunflower.
2. Next cut two strips of felt for the petals that are about 3 x 9 inches in size. Take one strip of felt and add a line of glue along one of the longer edges. Then fold the felt in half lengthwise and press down to secure the edges together. With the glued edge facing away from you, use the end of your scissors to make cuts into the folded edge that are about ¾ of the way into the felt. This will create loops that will eventually be the sunflower petals. Do this for both strips of felt.
3. Add a line of glue along the flat edge of one petal strip and place the rolled felt (flower center) at one the end of the strip so that only half of the roll is laying on the petals. Wrap the strip around and around the felt center until you’ve glued the entire strip in place. Do the same with the second petal strip, gluing it onto the other half of the rolled center. When finished, you can “open up” the petals on the front and back to reveal a sunflower on both sides.
   
   Optional: At this time, you can also glue random petals together from the front and back to fill in the wide opening between the two sides of the flower. This will give it a fuller look and feel.
4. Tuck a skewer into the seam of the flower and glue it in place. Repeat steps 1 – 4 to make as many felt sunflowers as you want for your fall bouquet. Set these aside.
5. Next, put some brown paint onto a damp paper towel and wipe the wood crates on all sides to give them a “stained” look. Rub off any excess paint and let them dry.
6. Adhere floral foam into both the large and small crate. Glue the smaller crate onto the larger one, making sure the floral foam is accessible in the larger (or bottom) crate.
7. Stick the felt sunflowers into the foam of the top crate. Vary up the heights of the skewers to add interest to your bouquet.
8. Tuck faux flowers (that match the colors of your felt sunflowers) into the crates. For our flower tower, we grouped faux flowers by color and by how light or dark they are. We started with purples or darker colors on the bottom and then worked our way up to lighter and brighter oranges, yellows and whites around the top. Fill in any gaps with fall leaves or other seasonal stems for a finishing touch.
