DIY Hot Dog Doggie Bandana

Let’s be frank. We love hot dogs.🌭 And the best place to get your wiener fix is gathered around the backyard grill with your favorite four-legged friend close by.

Did you know the third Wednesday in July is National Hot Dog Day? And we certainly weren’t going to let a holiday that celebrates both our favorite frankfurters and our adorable dachshunds (a.k.a. wiener dogs) pass us by without making something fun!

This week’s DIY Hot Dog Doggie Bandana features an adorable felt hot dog appliqué that’s almost as cute as the pup who wears it. It’s quick to make, easy to customize, and the paw-fect accessory for backyard barbecues, cookouts, and sunny summer adventures.

You’ll need…

  1.  The size of your bandana will depend on the size of your dog’s neck. As a guideline, you’ll start with a square piece of fabric for the base that is:
14 to 18 inch in size for small to medium sized dogs
22 to 26 inch in size for large to extra-large pups

Fold your square in half (diagonally) until the two points align and cut along the fold using pinking shears, so that you end up with two triangles of fabric. You’ll only need one triangle for this project. So the other can be set aside or used to make a second bandana.
  2. Cut out one red felt hot dog shape, two tan hot dog buns and a squiggly yellow shape for the mustard.
  3. Glue the hot dog pieces to the bottom corner of the bandana in layers, starting with the bun, then the hot dog, the mustard…and then top it off with the other bun. Press each piece down in place and let everything dry.
  4. Give the hot dog embellishment a little flair by adding stitch marks around the buns with the brown marker.
  5. Tie loosely around your dog’s neck, making a double knot. Be sure that it’s not too snug. You’ll know it fits perfectly when you can easily get a few of your fingers in between their neck and the cloth.

We love projects that make people smile, and this one is guaranteed to do just that. The classic picnic-inspired gingham and playful hot dog appliqué capture everything we love about summertime. Top it off with a happy pup sporting the cutest accessory in town, and you’ve got all the ingredients for one unforgettable backyard celebration.
