Patriotic Layered Stars

We have so much fun each week trying to come up with DIY craft ideas that are equal parts cute and easy to make. You know… the kind that come together quickly and still make you smile when you put them up on display.

This week we’re taking a set of wooden stars from Dollar Tree and dressing them up with layers of patriotic scrapbook paper in red, white, and blue. Add a few colorful beads and a simple twine hanger, and suddenly you’ve got the sweetest little piece of Americana décor.

It’s simple, budget-friendly, and perfect for adding a touch of patriotic charm to your home while celebrating America’s 250th birthday this Fourth of July.

You’ll need…

  1.  Trace the largest star on the back of a piece of scrapbook paper that has a blue patriotic design. Cut out the paper and glue (or Mod Podge) it onto the wood star.
  2. Do the same for the medium star, this time using a piece of paper with a design that’s predominantly white.
  3. Repeat this step with the smallest star using a patriotic paper that’s mostly red.
  4. Use sandpaper to remove any excess paper along the edges of each star.
  5. Next, glue your red, white and blue stars together in a stack with the largest star on bottom and the smallest star on top.
  6. Flip the star stack over so you’re looking at the back. Then, cut a good length of white twine for the hanger. Tie a knot in one end and glue it to one “arm” of the largest star.
  7. Add single beads onto the string in the following pattern: red, white, blue, blue, white, red. Tie a knot in the other end of the string and glue it to the largest star’s opposite “arm.” Pick up the star by the twine and let three beads fall into place on each side. That’s it!

How stinkin’ cute is this?! And it’s the kind of project that would be so perfect for a girls’ craft night! Set out a stack of wooden stars, a pile of patriotic papers, and a bowl of beads, then let everyone create their own version. Easy to make, fun to personalize, and everyone ends up with a sweet little salute to the red, white, and blue.
