Felt Pennant Garland for Spring

If you’re officially done with winter but spring hasn’t quite made its grand entrance, this week’s craft might be just what you need!

This DIY felt pennant garland is the perfect in-between project…a soft, spring-inspired banner that gently bridges the gap between Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day. With pastel shades, sweet hearts, playful shamrocks, and happy daisies all crafted with a light and airy palette, this spring garland decor feels like the first warm breeze that reminds you brighter days are coming.

Btw, all supplies can easily be found in your craft stash, making this DIY super budget-friendly. (Or free. Yay!)

You’ll need…

Felt Pennant Garland supplies on Amazon

  1. Start by cutting out a bunch of triangles using white felt. These will be the base for each pennant. (Note, 11 pennants should make a garland long enough for your fireplace mantel.) Cut triangles that are roughly 7.5 inches along the sides and 6 inches across the top.
  2. Cut out the same number of rectangles from light green felt that’s 6 x 1.5 inches in size. These will be the trim along the top of each pennant.
  3. To attach the trim, add a line of glue across the long edge of the light green rectangle and place the short side of one pennant on top. Add a line of glue across the other long edge of the rectangle and fold it on top of the pennant (so the pennant is sandwiched in-between). Trim the excess green felt on each side. Repeat this step to add trim to all the pennants.
  4. Using the dark green felt, cut two small rectangles for each pennant that are sized 3 by ¾ inches. These will be the tabs to hang each pennant.
  5. Add glue to both ends of a single tab. Place one tab end about an inch from the end of the light green trim, fold it over and attach the other end of the tab to the backside of the pennant trim. Attach a second tab one inch from the other end of the pennant trim. Repeat this step until all pennants have two tabs.

Now it’s time to make the fun embellishments for each pennant! For this project, we’re making shamrocks, daisy flowers, and heart decorations.
  6. To make the shamrock, cut out four M shaped petals that are about 1.5 inches tall. Next, use a needle and thread to string them together along the flat bottom. Pull the thread tight to gather the centers and tie it off to create that lucky clover shape. To make the stem, add glue into the folds of one petal and pinch the folds together near the center of the shamrock. Glue a green pom pom onto the center for a fun touch.
  7. To make the heart, cut a 2.5 – 3 inch heart shape from pink felt and a smaller one in white. You can freehand the heart shapes by drawing each directly onto the fabric, make quick cardboard stencils to trace, or use heart-shaped cookie cutters as a guide, if you have one on hand. Glue the smaller heart onto the larger one.
  8. To make the daisy, draw a freeform flower shape (roughly 3 inches in size) onto light blue felt and cut it out. Glue a yellow pom pom to the center of the flower.
  9. Make enough shamrocks, hearts and flowers so that each pennant can be decorated with one. Get creative and vary up the colors to make the garland cute and colorful. Adhere an embellishment to each pennant with glue.
  10. String all of the pennants together using twine or ribbon. Hang and enjoy!

And just like that, you’ve created a garland that feels fresh, cheerful, and totally ready for spring. It’s proof that a few simple shapes and soft colors can completely brighten a space. Best of all, no expert crafting skills required!
