12 Jun Picture Frame American Flag

It doesn’t take much to add a burst of summer joy to your space…just a few happy touches and you’re done! And this week’s Dollar Tree DIY is the perfect way to quickly bring some cheerful star-spangled spirit into your home. 

With a simple picture frame and a few fabric scraps, you can make a rustic flag that’s quick, budget-friendly, and full of handmade patriotic charm. Whether you pull from your craft stash or grab a few new prints, it’s all about having fun and adding a fresh, festive touch to your space!

The process is soooo easy and completely customizable. You’ll love it!

You’ll need…

• 5×7 wood picture frame
• White acrylic paint or chalk paint & brush
• Optional: Blue acrylic paint or chalk paint
• Scraps of blue, red and white fabric
• Fabric glue or hot glue
• Scissors

1. Remove the glass and backing from your picture frame. Set those pieces aside.
2. Lightly paint the frame with white paint. (Optional: You can follow up with the dry brush technique using blue paint to highlight any features of the frame.) Set this aside to dry.
3. Take the picture that the frame comes with and flip it over. Glue the picture insert (back side facing up) to the cardboard backing of the frame. This creates an all-white backdrop for your flag.
4. For the next layer, glue a piece of white fabric onto the cardboard backing (ours has a subtle paw print and hearts design on it!). Trim any excess fabric.
5. Cut or tear four 1×6 inch strips of red fabric for the stripes. You can pull a few threads to give them a more rustic look with raw edges. Glue the first two red stripes down onto the white fabric starting from the top, skip some space, then glue the second stripe. Then glue a red stripe across the bottom. This will make it easier to evenly space the third stripe and glue it into the proper position.
6. Cut a small rectangular piece of blue fabric for the stars area, pull the threads around all edges to give it an unfinished look and glue it into the upper left corner.
7. Place your completed flag into the frame and you’re done! (We left the glass out, but if you want to keep your flag dust-free, you can place the glass back into the frame, then add your flag.)
