Solar PuPkin Lanterns

Hurry on over to Walmart and grab yourself some Halloween pumpkin trick-or-treat buckets, ‘cuz we’ve got a spooky good craft for you to make with them!

Did you know these classic pumpkins pair beautifully with the Harbor Breeze solar-powered pathway lights found at Lowes? The top of the light is roughly 5 inches across which sits perfectly over the plastic jack-o-lanterns.

Add a few simple embellishments to turn each one into a puppy dog face and the end result is an adorable DIY Solar PuPkin Lantern that will light up your night all season long!

You’ll need…

  1. Drill a hole into the bottom of the plastic pumpkin that’s large enough to insert the solar light stake into.
  2. Remove the handle.
  3. Use a Sharpie marker to fill in the mouth and darken one eye. Make sure to draw a black line around the mouth, teeth and eye to give them more definition. Finally, don’t forget to draw a line going from the mouth to the nose. Let dry.
  4. Cut a large 3 inch circle from white vinyl and two smaller circles (about 1.5 inches in size) from black vinyl.
  5. Cut a slit halfway into the center of the white vinyl shape and place the vinyl over the eye without Sharpie on it. The slit will overlap as you wrap the vinyl around the curved shape of the pumpkin.
  6. Place one black circle over the white vinyl shape for an eye and use the other black circle for the nose.
  7. Cut two long dog ear shapes from the faux leather that are about 7-8 inches long and hot glue them to both sides of the pumpkin.
  8. Stick the solar light into the pumpkin all the way through the hole and add a bead of hot glue around the bottom of the pumpkin to secure it to the stake.
  9. Place lanterns in the sun to charge and watch them light up when the sun goes down!

So cute! The faces are so fun and quirky – and give off such a pretty glow at night. You could easily make a whole pack of pup-kins for your yard. Let the Howl-O-Ween fun begin!
