Btw, big thanks to @creatingthroughchaos for the inspo for today’s project. 🎃
You’ll need…
- 2 wooden craft crates
- Orange and off-white acrylic craft paints
- Raffia or spanish moss
- Small wood finial or rustic drawer knob
- Variety of fall ribbons, dog ribbons, ric rac and lace
- Twist tie
- Felt leaf cutouts
- Needle and thread (optional)
- Wood button
- Heat gun
- Paintbrush
- Fabric glue
- Hot glue gun and sticks
- Paint the outsides of two wood crates using orange paint. Let dry.
- Use a small amount of off-white paint along the crate slats and edges to give the crate a more rustic feel. You can water down the paint for a white-washed look or use a dry brush technique, if you prefer.
- Glue the two crates together using fabric or wood glue to create your pumpkin.
- Next add the pumpkin’s stem using a small wood finial or rustic knob. (Actually, a stick from your yard will work, too!)
Using an unfinished wood finial? Then you’ll want to stain or paint it before attaching it to the top of your pumpkin.
Using a drawer pull knob? Often these will have a bolt attached that needs to be removed before gluing it to your pumpkin. The easiest way to remove a stubborn bolt, is to use your heat gun to warm up the glue for about a minute. Then use pliers to unscrew the bolt from the drawer pull. Careful, the metal bolt will be HOT! - Take a handful of raffia or spanish moss and glue this to the base of the stem.
- Stack a variety of fall and dog ribbons, lace and ric rac that have been cut to about 7 inches in length. Use a twist tie in the center to cinch them all together. Glue this messy bow to the base of your stem.
- Add a little handmade pizzazz to your pumpkin’s fall leaf embellishments! Grab some needle, thread and a couple felt leaves. You can cut your own leaves from felt or find a bag of pre-cut felt leaves to use – and then make them your own by sewing some straight stitches down the center of each leaf to create the veining. These few stitches will really add a homey feel to your pumpkin!
- Glue your leaves to the base of your stem and top everything off with a single wooden button.
This is such a fun and inexpensive DIY idea! You can easily change the colors to suit your decor or occasion. Consider the classic orange, black and white combo for Halloween or mix in some reds and yellows for a more colorful Fall look!
