Dollar Tree DIY: Mutt-rific Pumpkin Makeover

During a recent trip to Dollar Tree, this fun orange jack-o-lantern caught our attention with it’s big toothy grin. It has the most wonderful pumpkin shape – making it a perfect candidate to update to a more cozy farmhouse design!

Let’s give this little cutie a well-deserved makeover…

You’ll need…

Step 1

Off with the old and on with the new! First remove all of the fringed orange tinsel. Before you begin, take a close look at the bottom of the pumpkin and find the start of the wire.

Slowly start to unwind the wire to see how it is attached, so you can repeat this technique when you replace the tinsel with yarn. Notice how the end is wound around a couple of nubs on the lower right side, then it skips the middle nub and winds around the bottom two nubs on the other side. As you keep removing the tinsel, you can see it simply goes back and forth across the pumpkin.

Continue unwrapping the pumpkin until all the tinsel (both orange and green) has been removed.

Step 2

Now the fun part! Tie one end of your chunky yarn to the lower right nub (second nub up from the bottom) where the start of the orange wire was. Moving from right to left, wrap the yarn around the adjacent nub – skip the middle nub – and then tightly wrap it around the next two nubs. (To get a better look at how this is done, the photo shows the backside of the pumpkin frame, so everything is flipped – with the initial knot on the left side of the pumpkin.)

Continue pulling the yarn back and forth across the entire pumpkin, tucking the yarn under the little hooks to keep the yarn in place. Be sure to pull tightly! This will help the yarn stay in place.

Once you get to the top of the pumpkin, tie or glue the end of the yarn to the frame.

Step 3

Tie some jute twine to the base of the pumpkin stem and begin winding the jute tightly around and around and around until the plastic stem shape is covered. Glue the end of jute in place.

Step 4

Saving the best for last, embellish your little pumpkin with a dog-themed ribbon or fabric bow.

So easy! You’ll love how quick it is to transform an inexpensive Dollar Tree pumpkin into a fabulous Fall home decor piece in honor of your furry best friend.
