07 Nov DIY WOOF Fall Doornament
Enjoying the fall – how ’bout y’all?!
The rustle of autumn leaves as our pups romp in the yard means that fall is in full swing and it’s time to create another dog-inspired masterpiece for the front door!
This year, we’re doin’ something a little different by découpaging some decorative fall papers onto 3D letters to create a fun and festive greeting as your guests arrive. The really cool part is it’s soooo customizable!
So grab your Mod Podge, brush and scissors, cuz we’re about to make a gorgeous DIY WOOF Fall Doornament!
You’ll need…
- Decorative alphabet letters (about 6 inches tall)
- Autumn-themed scrapbook papers
- Mod Podge and a brush
- A couple fall-colored ribbons
- Imitation fall leaves, flowers, pumpkins or other embellishments
- Hot glue gun and sticks
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Adhesive wall hooks (optional)
- Small branch (optional)
Step 1
Start by turning the letter upside down and trace it onto the back of the scrapbook paper. Cut out the shape so there’s extra space all around. (If your letters are fat like these, you may need to cut additional extra space around the tracing.)
Step 2
Brush the front of the letter with a thin coat of Mod Podge. Flip it over onto the shape you just traced to secure it to the paper. As you place the letter on the paper, smooth out any of the air bubbles.
Continue covering the letter, applying a coat of Mod Podge on the wooden shape as you go. Bend and press the paper around the edges. You’ll likely need to make tiny cuts in the paper along the curves and corners to help ensure the paper is pressed up against the form. As you work your way around the shape, patch any exposed areas with pieces of the scrap paper. Smooth out any air bubbles. Then, repeat steps one and two for each letter.
Step 3
Gently brush another layer of Mod Podge on top of the paper to secure it to your letters.
Step 4
Next, tie one end of a long ribbon to the top of each letter. Embellish one or two of the letters with small pumpkins, pine cones, berries, etc., glue them in your desired spot, and they’re done!
Step 5
Decorate your front door by hanging each letter separately using adhesive hooks that are placed towards the top on the inside of the door. Be sure to place the hooks upside down so you can tie the other end of the ribbon to them. (If you don’t have any adhesive hooks, painters tape could also do the trick!) The wood letters can go over the top of the door and hang down the front for your guests to see.
Another fun option is to tie each ribbon to a small branch. This way, you can hang your fall decor in your entryway foyer, your living room – or it would even look stunning above your fireplace.
So fun and doggone easy! We just love how customizable this project is! You can make one for any season or holiday and with any letters or saying of your choice. For today, it’s all about the WOOF.
