02 Aug DIY Scrapbook Paper Doggie Decor
Maybe you’ve just brought home your first puppy… or perhaps you’ve had a canine crew all your life… Either way, you’re gonna LOVE this project, because it’s the perfect item to spruce up any dog corner or play space and give your home some good ol’ puppy ruv.
And the best part is this DIY Scrapbook Paper Doggie Decor is full of rustic charm and made from simple things you likely have already lying around the house. So it can be done in just a few minutes!
You’ll need…
- Scrap piece of wood (this example uses a 2×6 board that’s roughly 7 inches long)
- 2-3 sheets of colorful scrapbook paper or wrapping paper
- Natural burlap 5.5 inch ribbon in white (or some paint)
- Jute twine
- Mod podge
- Brush
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- A brown wooden bead, a pebble or a button for the nose
Note, you can use pretty much any size scrap piece of wood or a pre-cut finished wood piece, if you prefer.
Step 1
Prep your piece of wood (sand it down smooth, as needed) and either paint or varnish it. This scrap wood was lightly sanded and varnished to enhance its natural color.
Step 2
Cut a piece of burlap a little shorter than the wood and secure it using your hot glue gun. You won’t need much glue here… just enough to hold it in place. The idea is so you don’t see a bunch of glue coming through its webbing. Be careful not to burn your fingers when you push down to secure it to the wood!
Step 3
Set the wood to the side and grab your scrapbook papers. Tear out shapes to make your pup. For the example shown, you’ll need a head, body, ears and two feet. To give the ears a “lift”, slightly curl under the top edge of the paper (where it will attach to the head).
Step 4
Lay them in place on your wood backdrop so you know just where everything will go. Then start applying Mod Podge to the backside of each piece of paper and glue them in place…. EXCEPT for the ears. You’ll do those in the next step.
Step 5
Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the back of the ear on the bottom portion only. Then use the hot glue gun to apply a bit of glue along the top edge of the ear and place on the dog’s head.
Step 6
Lightly coat the entire dog with Mod Podge. Do your best to make sure there aren’t any bubbles, as you go.
Step 7
Cut a piece of jute twine about 7-8 inches long. For a thick and wispy tail, fold the string in half and tie a knot in the middle. Then keep tying knots until you get near the end of the string. Fluff the end of the tail by separating the strands as much as you can.
Step 8
The last step is to use your glue gun to adhere both the twine tail and the bead, button or pebble nose in place on the dog.
Ok, so how adorable is this rustic diy dog decor?!! And it’s one of those projects that’s just so easy, something that can be used in numerous places around the house, in your dog’s area, a child’s room…on shelves, etc…So what are you waiting for? Get yourself some scrap wood and some pretty paper and get to work!
